0-0 Definition of Insurrection

Insurrection is a revolution of imagination and novel ideas, a series of movements of anti-tradition, and dynamic interaction between anti and pro forces.

1-1 Research on Tiananmen Square Protest 1989.

Tiananmen Square protest in Beijing is such a typical incident, a whole process of conflict between control and freedom, an intensive opposition between reality and imagination, a critical point between predictable future and potential future of China.

In this urban game board, space with various forms of representation, became a super agent for different forces to control powers in the conflict, no matter protesters or anti-protesters.

Following the general diagram of insurrection, I would like to focus my views on two points:

1-1-1 During insurrection, through altering usual way in using space, people can transform and redefine space with imagination, in various scales: country, city, building, infrastructure, and details…….

A. In country scale, insurrection made a topological transformation between political space and economic space. China becomes from a political country to an economic country space in ten years.

B. In city scale, insurrection made Beijing city transformed from open system to closed system, from homogeneous structure to heterogeneous structure in two months.

C. In event scale, almost all of components of the city were redefined by protesting and anti-protesting flows in the insurrection.

C-1 Tiananmen Square.
Protesters controlled and employed the square in their own way, which was redefined and converted from a mono-function 2D plane to a multi-layer 3D construction with dreams and imagination.

C-2 Streets.
When controlled under protesters, no cars, main street functioned as a square; when controlled under army, only tank, it functioned as a line without width.

C-3 Buildings.
Under the control of fire force, buildings changed from normal state of open system to isolated units, at the same time, the structure of the whole city became closed system.

C-4 Walls in the city.
Given meanings, smooth surface of walls from a thin piece expanded into space and formed an invisible field with high density.

C-5 Transportation.
Under the control of government, transportation space became fire doors of the city only with one direction, from normal state of opened revolving door.

1-1-2 At the same time, space can also re-effect processing insurrections and even change results of insurrections, when people modify scale, location, form, and structure of space.

Questions…..
If these parameters of the game of insurrection are modified,
What will happen?
If given a chance,
How to come true the dream and imagination in our heads in such an complex urban network?
If there is an insurrection here and now,
What can “architecture” do?
